"Thinking Time"
Read Time: 3 mins
I've been incorporating a practice called "thinking time" into my weekly routine lately...
Thinking time is a practice done by successful people the world over.
For me, it was sparked by the book
"The Road Less Stupid"
by Keith Cunningham.
Here are 3 ways it's majorly impacted my work life recently:
1) I Have Time to Sit & Analyze a "Big Issue"
Rather than run around with a hammer and try to take down brick walls by brute force...
I'm now
strategically
calculating its demolition.
Big difference. Setting aside time to *just think* is priceless.
2) It Forces Me to Get Crystal Clear On Bottlenecks
Since I'm actually writing things down, forcing myself to get clear thoughts out via pen and paper, my mind is empty and ready to execute afterwards.
In the modern world, we hardly have time to slow down anymore.
But clear writing requires clear
thinking
.
And clear thinking begets clear
solutions
.
3) Fresh New Thoughts Surface & Aid My Solutions
Lately, I've been uncovering thoughts I may not have consciously considered before - but were always present.
This pausing of time -
and slowing of pace
- helps me uncover new avenues...
Avenues that can help me get my desired end result!
It's the ultimate conscious & subconscious collaboration.
Avoid These Mistakes:
The biggest pitfall to avoid here is getting
sidetracked
.
You'll want to clear everything off your desk, close browser tabs, put your phone in another room, and just
THINK.
Maybe
you want to keep some soft, lyric-free music going in the background... and you'll probably want a pen and pad nearby.
But that's it!
Train your discipline here; focus on one task -
thinking.
Thinking through your biggest challenges.
Thinking through your campaign flows and marketing strategies.
Thinking through your customer's largest wants and desires.
That's the only way you're going to reach breakthroughs.
Tying It All Together:
Here's a little recap for you:
First, you're going to block off a dedicate chunk of time.
15 minutes is a great start - you can build it up later, just like meditation.
Then, you'll put everything else away.
Get out a pen, pad, and
(maybe)
some chill music that helps you focus.
Then, you write out stimulating questions that force you to deeply think through your challenges, map out your plans, or progress in some way.
Example:
Recently, I was building new lead channels, to nurture, followup, and get clients from.
A few months ago, I was stuck without any progress here.
So, I asked myself questions like:
"Where do my best prospects hang out?
"What value can I offer them, that's not spammy or generic, to get them to respond?"
"How
would I want to be approached, if I were on the receiving end?"
And so forth. Try it yourself; I guarantee you'll find some breakthroughs!
Your One-Minute Takeaway:
Incorporate a set time -
just
for thinking.
Map out broad, high-level questions - then narrow them down with the answers that come up.
Find the most important, actionable 2-3 takeaways - then execute like a true hustler would.
Now go forth and break through walls, my friend.
